Treaty 6

Alberta Online Encyclopedia : “Can we stop the power of the white man from spreading over the land like the grasshoppers that cloud the sky and then fall to consume every blade of grass and every leaf on the trees in their path? I think not. Before this happens let us ponder carefully our choice of roads.”

— Plains Cree Chief Ahtahkakoop (Star Blanket), as quoted by interpreter Peter Erasmus at the Treaty 6 negotiations at Fort Carleton in 1876

Labor is the Superior of Capital

kuro5hin: “Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves the much higher compensation.”

The bonfire of the inanities

Portland Phoenix: For 2005, my annual task of reviewing the past year has been complicated by an old adage: oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. Here I sit, tangled in a web that many people began weaving way back when the Gipper was protecting us against deadly pollutants released by old-growth forests. It was a jumble out there this year — one that defies linear documentation

The war on Winter Solstice

saturnalia.jpgNanovirus: For thousands of years humanity had celebrated the beginning of days getting longer in a peaceful and celebratory manner: No longer. There is a war on. Historians generally agree that the Cult of Christ started the War on Solstice. They began by coopting the symbols of this most ancient of celebrations: holly, evergreen trees and the Yule log. Those cultists even moved the date of their god’s birth from summer to winter!

Harold Pinter’s Nobel acceptance speech

Guardian Unlimited Books: “The crimes of the United States have been systematic, constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have actually talked about them. You have to hand it to America. It has exercised a quite clinical manipulation of power worldwide while masquerading as a force for universal good. It’s a brilliant, even witty, highly successful act of hypnosis.”

Tyson Foods sells religion to cover up its dirty doings

DIRELAND: “All this godbothering is, of course, designed to cover up Tyson’s dirty record as a rapacious, union-busting, exploitative corporation that endangers the lives of its workers, exploits immigrant labor, and doesn’t stop at utilizing violence and fraud to achieve its reactionary goals.”

A quarter-century of U.S. support for occupation in East Timor

National Security Archive: “The Archive has worked for many years to open U.S. government files on Indonesia and East Timor. In December 2001, the Archive posted newly declassified documents showing that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and President Gerald Ford gave the green light to Indonesia’s 1975 invasion of East Timor, the beginning of a 24-year occupation in which more than 100,000 Timorese died.”

Military historian: Costly withdrawal is the price to be paid for a foolish war

The Forward Newspaper Online: By Martin van Creveld. “For misleading the American people, and launching the most foolish war since Emperor Augustus in 9 B.C sent his legions into Germany and lost them, Bush deserves to be impeached and, once he has been removed from office, put on trial along with the rest of the president’s men. If convicted, they’ll have plenty of time to mull over their sins.”

Ground Farce 1: Queen’s fury as Bush goons wreck garden

Sunday Mirror (UK)November 24, 2003 &nbsp The Queen is furious with President George W. Bush after his state visit caused thousands of pounds of damage to her gardens at Buckingham Palace.

The rotors of the President’s Marine Force One helicopter and two support Black Hawks damaged trees and shrubs that had survived since Queen Victoria’s reign. And Bush’s army of clod-hopping security service men trampled more precious and exotic plants…. The Americans made alterations to accommodate specialised equipment. The mass of gadgetry meant the Royals couldn’t get a decent TV picture during the visit.
