The namesake may be a Canadian Pacific Railway surveyor named H. P. Bell, who scouted the Fraser River above Fort George in the winter of 1875–76.

Some say that Bell Mountain was named in the 1960s because of a fancied resemblance to a bell. It was also known as Mount Baldy. A sign for the “Belle Mountain Ski Area” appears at the foot of Bell Mountain Road.
