In memorian: Hans Schwarz (1930-2026) :

With sadness we share news of the passing of Hans Schwarz, one of the ACMG’s first Mountain Guides and a longtime member of the Jasper mountain community. Born in Bern, Switzerland, Hans came to Canada in 1956 and went on to build an extraordinary guiding career rooted in strength, humility and natural ability. Hans passed Walter Perren’s guide exam in 1962 and became one of the early leaders of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.

Based in Jasper, Hans climbed Mount Robson a dozen times, helped shape generations of climbers and guides, served as ACMG vice president and then president beginning in 1969, and was later made an honoured member. Across decades of guiding, teaching and mentorship, he made an enduring contribution to mountain culture in Canada.

Hans was known for his immense competence in the mountains, his role in pioneering routes and rescue training, and his quiet, steady presence. He was not someone who sought the spotlight, but his impact on Canadian mountaineering was profound and lasting.
Hans’s family includes his wife, Helen, and two sons, along with many friends in Jasper and beyond.
