After Ian Monroe (1951-1987), pilot, killed in a helicopter accident 1 September 1987. Monroe was the third generation of a family of trappers, guiders and prospectors in Kakwa area; the C.C.I. Aviation camp, owned by Monroe, is at the base of this mountain.
Monroe and others made presentations to the Wilderness Advisory Committee, eventually leading to the creation of Kakwa Recreation Area.
Name adopted in March 1988 as submitted by McBride Chamber of Commerce and BC Parks.
